Peter Pan & Wendy: Disney’s Live-Action Film Gets First Trailer

We just got our first look at the upcoming Disney film Peter Pan & Wendy, a reimagining of the classic animated film adapted from J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan story — and it will be coming to Disney Plus by the end of April.

In the trailer, we see the familiar premise of a young Wendy (played by Ever Anderson), and her brothers being whisked away to the world of Neverland. In this magical world with pirates, mystical creatures, and a group of runaway children known as The Lost Boys, the group are taken under the wing of one Peter Pan (played by Alexander Molony), who teaches them the ways of flying and maintaining their adventurous spirit. As they all contend with the rules of the magical world where no one grows up, the group will conflict with Captain Hook (played by Jude Law) and his band of pirates.

Coming from writer/director David Lowery — who helmed the 2016 Pete’s Dragon reboot and 2021’s The Green Knight — Peter Pan & Wendy looks to be a far more introspective yet whimsical take on Barrie’s original novel. The trailer shows off the large scope of the film, along with many familiar characters and locations are shown from the original story and animated film. We also get our first look at Tinkerbell (played by Yara Shahidi), who looks just as charming as the animated film. The upcoming movie looks to be equally grounded and stylized in its approach, which should make for an interesting adaptation.

The story of Peter has seen a whole host of remakes and adaptations in recent years, but this film looks to be returning to basics for its story. In a press release sent out with the trailer, the writer/director David Lowery explained his particular vision for the film.

“In making ‘Peter Pan & Wendy,’ we set out to craft a film that honors both the original J.M. Barrie text and Walt Disney’s animated adaptation; we wanted to invigorate our retelling with emotional sincerity, an open heart, and a grand yearning for adventure,” he said. “Hundreds of incredible artists spent many years bringing this film to the screen; I’m excited for audiences to see their work, to go on this ride, and to rediscover an evergreen tale from a new perspective.”

It’s releasing straight to Disney+ on April 28. Currently, Disney+ is churning out tons of shows and movies, and Peter Pan & Wendy will be another notable entry in the service’s expansive catalog. Recently, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever made its streaming debut on Disney+ and became the highest-viewed premiere for a Marvel film in the service’s history.
