Phil Nevin gets ejected as Angels fall to Yankees in extra innings
The Angels offense inched its way forward trying to overcome Aaron Judge and the Yankees. With the game tied in the ninth, manager Phil Nevin was ejected after arguing with umpires, who had just declared that Mike Trout struck out to end the inning.
The game went into the 10th, neither team able to capitalize on traffic on the basepaths. But it was the Angels that lost to the Yankees 3-2 on a chilly April evening after Matt Moore loaded the bases, then Gleyber Torres hit a sac fly to drive in the winning run.
Earlier in the game, Shohei Ohtani hit the sixth pitch to him toward Yankee Stadium’s Monument Park in center field. The ball was poised to get out and drop onto the protective netting. Until Judge happened.
The Yankees outfielder ran back toward the center field wall, leapt up and extended his gloved hand. The ball didn’t find the inside of his glove, instead hitting the bottom, rolling down his arm and into his bare hand.
The crowd screamed, half thinking Ohtani’s shot went out, half thinking Judge robbed the home run. The latter were correct, proven right when Judge raised the hand he was holding the baseball in.
Judge later that inning then returned the favor Ohtani extended on Tuesday. Ohtani hit a first-inning home run into the Yankees bullpen on Tuesday night. Judge hit a two-run shot into the Angels bullpen on Wednesday.
The Angels did get two runs across on a pair of RBIs between the fifth and eighth innings.
But with the opportunity to get the go-ahead run across, Judge, in another dramatic, highlight, was again the Angels’ obstacle. Brandon Drury hit a liner that dared to the warning track in center field. And there was Judge, diving and sliding, making the catch.
The Angels’ quiet night was not for a lack of opportunity. The team went 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position on Tuesday, stranding 11.
