Piers Morgan targeted by World Cup fans as Cristiano Ronaldo out
Piers Morgan has been mocked after Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal were dumped out of the World Cup by Morocco. The television presenter has been a staunch defender of the axed former Manchester United star but fell silent following Portugal’s exit.
It was an interview with Morgan that prompted Ronaldo’s blockbuster departure from the Red Devils in November. The 57-year-old has since defended the football icon while he continues to attract negative headlines.
Morgan was quick to tweet about Ronaldo’s rival, Lionel Messi, on Friday. Messi progressed to the semi-final of the World Cup but the former newspaper editor felt the Paris Saint-Germain ace should have been sent off in the game. He made that opinion clear in a blunt tweet after Argentina’s win over Holland.
But there was radio silence from Morgan after Portugal and Ronaldo were knocked out. Fans took to social media to mock his relationship with the forward.
One fan asked: “Portugal out Ronaldo in tears, beautiful scenes has anyone checked on Piers Morgan.”
Alongside three crying-laughing emojis, another person joked: “You know Piers has left Ronaldo 3 miss calls already.”
“expect to see Ronaldo run out on the pitch during the France v. England match screaming, ‘Piers, we would have won if I started!’” mocked another fan.
Another said: “Yo @piersmorgan ! When’s the Portugal World Cup exclusive of Ronaldo coming out?”
Morgan instead chose to praise Morocco, whose shock 1-0 win over Portugal ensured Ronaldo’s exit in what was likely his final World Cup. Fans inundated the message with further mocking about the Real Madrid icon.
