Pimblett vs Gordon branded ‘robbery’ as scoring called into question

Paddy Pimblett controversially defeated Jared Gordon via unanimous decision this morning with all three judges’ scorecards reading 29-28. After the fight, Pimblett claimed that the bout “wasn’t close” but he will struggle to find many that agree.

Gordon had a strong opening round, landing his backhand at will from the southpaw stance while Pimblett came back with some clean flurries.

Round two saw Gordon using more of his wrestling as he clinched and smothered Pimblett up against the cage. Pimblett was able to get some decent striking off during these exchanges, hammering Gordon’s head with elbows and almost catching him in a choke.

There was more of the same in round three although Pimblett was not able to put up much resistance outside of a reversal in the final few seconds. As the two men paraded around the Octagon with their hands raised the consensus was that Gordon had done enough but the judges thought otherwise.

Meanwhile, UFC veteran Michael Johnson branded the fight a “robbery”. However, not everyone believed the fight was a clear Gordon victory, MMA media member Luke Thomas said: “Gordon might win that, might not. It’s close. Either way, the hype behind Pimblett’s eventual ascension as a title contender probably slows a bit after tonight.”

Pimblett improves his UFC record to 4-0 with his latest victory and is now expected to headline a UFC Fight Night card at some point next year as promised by company president Dana White on the understanding that the Liverpudlian returned the goods at UFC 282.
