Pokemon: Detective Pikachu 2 May Still Be in the Works

It turns out the potential sequel to Pokemon: Detective Pikachu may still be in the works.

The sequel was officially announced in 2019 months before Detective Pikachu even hit theaters, with Oren Uziel attached to write the script. However, there were no updates that signaled positive development after that, with star Justice Smith saying in a 2021 interview, “I think we have to just kind of bury our hopes. I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

Well, maybe it’s time to dig up those hopes. A spokesperson for Legendary, the studio behind Detective Pikachu, told Polygon that a sequel is still in “active development.” When reached by IGN, a Legendary spokesperson said they “can only confirm that we are in active development as was reported by Polygon,” but shared no further details.

Detective Pikachu writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez previously suggested to Polygon that they were not involved with the sequel, adding that the situation was “complicated” with “a lot of big studio, corporate Pokémon rights things that we’re not privy to.”

“It’s an ongoing conversation that is still not over to this day,” Samit said.

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, also starring Ryan Reynolds as the voice of the titular electric mouse, pulled in solid box office results with $433 million worldwide. In his 8/10 review for IGN, Joshua Yehl wrote, “while video game movies haven’t had the best track record, this movie is by and far the best example of how to do one right.”
