Police raid Paris 2024 Olympics HQ and launch probe into suspected corruption
The national financial prosecutor’s office confirmed a probe into alleged corruption on Tuesday morning. It comes just over a year from the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.
AFP first reported on the raid, claiming that it happened early on Tuesday morning. Paris 2024 has since commented to say it is helping to facilitate police enquiries.
“A search is currently underway at the headquarters of the Organising Committee,” Paris 2024 said in a statement to Express Sport. “Paris 2024 is cooperating fully with the investigators to facilitate their enquiries.”
An official with the financial prosecutor’s office said the searches are linked to two investigations based on information provided by an anti-corruption agency. Paris 2024 has declined to make any further comments at this time.
Paris won the bid to host the 2024 Olympics in 2017, finally succeeding in a lengthy battle to host the Games for the first time since 1924. It will take place in the French capital next summer.
The police raid comes less than a month after the same offices were stormed by protestors. Activists made their way into the headquarters, which are located in Saint-Denis, on June 6 to protest against pension reforms.
