Premier League matches suspended due to medical emergencies involving fans

Two separate Premier League matches were momentarily suspended on Wednesday after medical emergencies involving fans in the stands.

The Watford vs. Chelsea and Southampton vs. Leicester City matches both saw incidents in the stands lead to a pause in play, though each game would eventually resume.

It’s the second and third instance of a fan emergency forcing officials to halt a match this season. In October’s contest between Newcastle and Tottenham, play was temporarily stopped at St James’ Park as a fan was given emergency treatment in the stands.

In that instance, the fan was stabilized and taken to the hospital, with the game restarted after a delay of 20 minutes.

Watford vs. Chelsea emergency

A fan is stable and hospitalized for treatment after suffering cardiac arrest at Vicarage Road. The game was halted after 13 minutes of play while the fan received treatment in the stands.

Both sets of players were directed to their respective locker rooms due to the medical emergency. The match was delayed for around 30 minutes, before it resumed following the news that the fan had been taken to the hospital.

Several players and fans alerted the referee and medical officials of a developing incident in the stands, leading to the stoppage.

After a delay, the fan was taken off on a stretcher, with Watford saying on Twitter that the supporter had been stabilized.

Southampton vs. Leicester City emergency

It was a similar story at St. Mary’s Stadium, except this incident happened at halftime, causing a delay in the start of the second half.

The scene also saw stewards and emergency personnel dispatched into the crowd, attending to the individual in question.
