Prime Video Is Reportedly Adding an Ad-Supported Tier
Amazon reportedly plans to launch an ad-supported tier to its Prime Video streaming service, The Wall Street Journal Reports.
The Wall Street Journal notes that sources close to the matter have said discussions are still in “the early stages” but have been ongoing “over the past several weeks.” Prime Video is currently available for those with a Prime membership, which costs $14.99 a month. In comparison, a standalone subscription to Prime Video is only $8.99 per month.
Of course, an ad-supported tier for a video streaming service is not a novel idea, as several of Prime Video’s competitors, including Max, Disney+, and more recently, Netflix, all offer a cheaper subscription tier, but comes with the caveat of having to watch ads before streaming a movie or show on the service.
The outlet also notes that Amazon has been “discussing various ways” to roll out ads onto Prime Video. One such option mentioned included bringing more ads to those already subscribed to Prime Video but giving them “an option to pay for an ad-free alternative” along with some other features not specific.
Interestingly, the report mentions that Amazon is also in discussions with Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount to begin offering ad-supported versions of Max and Paramount+, respectively, into the Prime Video Channels.
