PSVR 2 Unlocked for PC with Support for Positional Tracking through SteamVR Driver
At the moment, the most powerful piece of hardware in the VR section of gaming is easily Sony’s PlayStation VR 2. However, its potential is stunted thanks to the platform limitations it comes with, and players would love to try this headset on platforms such as PC too. Interestingly, the dev that made it possible to use the PSVR with Steam has recently found a way to bypass Sony and get the PSVR 2 running on PC with some additional features too.
PSVR 2 unlocked for PC
As spotted by Exputer, IVRy, the dev responsible for bringing the SteamVR driver to use Sony PSVR, Oculus, Pico, Daydream Headset, or even iPhone or Android Smartphone as a VR headset for your PC has been tinkering away with the PSVR 2 on PC as well for some time now. The dev’s latest post on their Twitter reveals that they have finally made progress and the answer to the question, “Can PSVR2 be used on PC?” is yes, it can.
IVRy’s tweet states that the PSVR 2 wasn’t being authenticated on PC as it couldn’t prove a DSC (digital signature certificate). To bypass this issue, they had to modify an “AMD Open Source Linux GPU driver” which would then “force DSC” to get the “PSVR 2 in VR mode. Thanks to this progress, they can now work towards designing hardware on windows for it.
Furthermore, another tweet reveals that they have also been able to gain access to the 6DOF positional tracking that the PSVR 2 comes with. The report by Exputer also revealed that the IVRy was able to get Half-Life: Alyx running on PC through the PSVR 2 some time back, and that was done through an alpha version of the SteamVR driver, along with 6DOF tracking through NoloVR.
However, players should know that this doesn’t mean that PSVR 2 will be available for PC immediately, it only means that the major obstacles are out of the way and the devs can now work towards “regular reverse-engineering undocumented hardware and writing drivers for it”. Players should know that PSVR 2 on PC is a possibility, but not an immediate one by any means.
