Psychonauts 2 reportedly Double Fine’s ‘best-selling’ release to date

Psychonauts 2 reportedly Double Fine’s ‘best-selling’ release to date

Long-time-coming sequel saw hugely positive reception

It took forever and a day to get here, but it appears that the wait was worth it. Psychonauts 2, which launched on PS4, PC, and Xbox platforms back in 2021, was apparently a resounding success for Double Fine Games — seemingly becoming the quirky studio’s highest-rated and best-selling release to date.

This revelation comes via a series of tweets from Lisette Titre-Montgomery, who worked as an art director at Double Fine but left the studio in early April. Titre-Montgomery notes in her tweets that the chrono-conundrum sequel received numerous nominations at The Game Awards 2021 (including Best Art Direction and Game of the Year), as well as the 2021 DICE Awards (Adventure Game of the Year, Best Art Direction), ultimately becoming the studio’s best-rated title. This is a meaty accomplishment given Double Fine’s respected pedigree of hits, including Brutal Legend, The Cave, and Broken Age.

While no specific number was revealed, “best-selling” would imply that Psychonauts 2 has surpassed the studio’s record of 1.7 million sales — previously achieved by the original Psychonauts back in 2005. It should also be noted that Psychonauts 2 was available on the Xbox Game Pass service, so it is unknown whether downloads are being taken into account. Either way, there’s no denying that the sequel has been a smash hit with fans. Here’s hoping they won’t have to wait another 17 years for Raz’s next return.

Psychonauts 2 is available now on PS4, PC, and Xbox One, you can check out our own Zoey Handley’s thoughts on the psychedelic adventure right here.
