Pullela Gopichand files nomination for BAI VP’s post | Badminton News – Times of India
HYDERABAD: In a twist to the elections of the Badminton Association of India (BAI), chief coach Pullela Gopichand on Friday filed his nomination for the post of the vice-president.
It was believed that Gopichand would file his nomination for the general secretary’s post and that he had also got the nod of president Himanta Biswa Sarma.
But after hectic parleys, Gopichand filed his nomination for the VP’s post along with outgoing secretary Ajay Singhania while junior India coach Sanjay Mishra filed his nomination for the post of general secretary.
Despite Gopichand’s interest to become the general secretary, it looked difficult on technicality. As per the BAI constitution, to be elected as the general secretary, one should be a member of the executive committee. Since Gopichand was not a member of the executive committee, he was unable to file his nomination for the post of general secretary. Gopichand will now be one of the 12 vice-presidents.
Meanwhile, Sarma is on course to be elected as the president unopposed. The last date for the withdrawal of nominations is March 19 and election, if necessary, will be held on March 25.
Though disappointed, Gopichand is keen to be on the executive committee of BAI. Sources said that since Sanjay Mishra is also close to Gopichand and with both of them having a good equation with Himanta, the former All England champion will begin his new role as an administrator on March 25.
Former Union minister and president of Tamil Nadu Badminton Association (TNBA) Anbumani Ramadoss will be another vice-president. Arun Lakhani will be the treasurer and Omar Rashid will take over as the joint secretary.
However, Gopichand and Mishra may have to resign as coaches.
