Purdue lineman ‘chugs’ random beer thrown onto field during Iowa upset
Iowa fans were exceptionally frustrated watching their second-ranked Hawkeyes lay an egg against Purdue on Saturday — frustrated enough, even, to waste perfectly good beer.
During the third quarter of unranked Purdue’s 24-7 upset of Iowa, an unknown Hawkeyes fan tossed a beer onto the field of Kinnick Stadium. Offensive lineman Greg Long saw the beer and, clearly not wanting it to go to waste, picked it up and dumped it on his face.

Gotta stay hydrated, right?
To be fair to the random Iowa fan, the Hawkeyes — who had just climbed to No. 2 in the polls following their win over No. 4 Penn State — responded with an absolute dud of a game. The defense had no answer for Boilermakers quarterback Aidan O’Connell, who completed 30 of 40 passes for 375 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver David Bell also caught 11 receptions for 140 yards and one of O’Connell’s touchdowns. Comparatively, Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras threw four interceptions while his team struggled to fewer than 100 yards rushing.

The question now becomes whether Long will be disciplined for dumping the beer. Georgia Southern defensive tackle Gavin Adcock, for example, was suspended from the team after surfing the team bus and chugging a beer thrown to him before the Eagles’ 28-20 loss to Louisiana in Week 4. It’s obviously worth noting that Saturday’s incident happened during the game and Long, a redshirt senior, is old enough to consume alcohol.
Something else to consider: Whether Long can capitalize on the viral moment to get some sort of sponsorship. In the age of Name Image and Likeness in college football, anything is possible.

Curiously, the Iowa-Purdue game wasn’t the only game that saw trash thrown onto the field. In a decidedly less fun atmosphere, Tennessee fans pelted Lane Kiffin and No. 13 Ole Miss late in the Rebels’ 31-26 win in Neyland Stadium. The actions there will likely result in fines against the university and has been widely panned by several observers, including the SEC.
