PV Sindhu knocked out of India Open in opening round | Badminton News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu had a dismal start in her home tourney as she was knocked out in the very first round of the India Open Super 750 event after losing to Thailand’s Supanida Katethong on Tuesday.
Double Olympic-medallist Sindhu went down 12-21, 20-22 to the world No. 30 in the women’s singles Round of 32 match. Incidentally, World No. 7 Sindhu, a former India Open champion, had lost to the same player in the semis in the last edition.
Sindhu didn’t appear at her best as she struggled against the left-handed Supanida. The Thai opponent, who was precise in her returns and looked in more control in the rallies as she won the opening game quite easily.
Former world champion Sindhu came back strongly in the second game as she moved from 12-17 to grab one game point at 19-20.
Sindhu, in fact, had left the court after the opponent’s return was called out. But a video referral showed that the shuttle had actually kissed the line, handing her opponent a chance to close the match and she did it in style after Sindhu went wide.
Sindhu’s return after a long injury lay-off at the Malaysia Open last week was spoilt by long-time nemesis Spain’s Carolina Marin, who herself is on a comeback trail having sustained two ACL injuries in both her knees in the last few years.
Earlier in the day, a clinical Lakshya Sen defeated compatriot HS Prannoy in straight games to advance to the pre-quarters.
Defending champion Lakshya registered an easy 21-14, 21-15 win over Prannoy at the KD Jadhav Indoor hall in IG stadium to make a winning start to his title defence.
World No. 12, seeded seventh, Lakshya looked in complete control against world No. 9 Prannoy, avenging his Malaysia Open defeat last week.
Reigning champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also stormed into the second round after beating Scotland’s Christopher Grimley and Matthew Grimley 21-13, 21-15 in their men’s doubles opener.
Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand notched up a 22-20, 17-21, 21-18 win over France’s world No. 29 Margot Lambert and Anne Tran in their opener.
Among other Indians, N Sikki Reddy and her new women’s doubles partner Shruti Mishra went down fighting 17-21, 19-21 to Germany’s Linda Efler and Isabel Lohau.
