Qingdao FC head coach Wu Jingui quits following 10 straight losses

The off-field dramas within the ranks of the Chinese Super League continue unabated, with Wu Jingui announcing late on Monday that he was stepping down as head coach of struggling Qingdao FC.

Qingdao registered their tenth consecutive loss on Sunday, falling 3-0 to Shanghai Shenhua during the opening match of round 15, cementing an unfavourable record of the longest losing streak in CSL history. During a post-match press conference Wu sought to lay the blame on his coaching staff.

“Everyone has seen that the overall situation this year is very unsatisfactory and encountered many problems,” he said. “The players have worked hard on the field. The main problem may be the coaching staff. It’s time to adjust the coaching staff.”

Just hours after making those comments, the veteran coach resigned and announced assistant coach Yang Weijian would take over as caretaker for the remainder of the season.

Wu took on coaching duties in August 2020, but lacklustre performances have seen them drop to the bottom of the table.
