Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 6 Gen 1, Snapdragon 4 Gen 1: Here’s everything you need to know – Times of India

Last year, Qualcomm adopted a new naming scheme for its chipsets with the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Now, the silicon manufacturer is extending the branding to its budget-conscious chipsets with the newly announced Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 1. The new budget chipsets from Qualcomm bring more than new names on board.
Qualcomm did not divulge the details of the two chips, so there is not much we know about the architecture of these two. But, the chipmaker shared how the two improved from their predecessors in different aspects.
Snapdragon 6 Gen 1: The new mid-range chipset with improved 5G connectivity
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 is a 4nm chip with an octa-core Kryo CPU clocked at up to 2.2GHz. The chipset features an Adreno GPU with Vulkan 1.1, OpenGL ES 3.2, and OpenCL 2.0 FP API support. The Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 further brings hardware-accelerated H.256 and VP9 decoder and HDR Playback codec support for HLG.
Qualcomm says the new Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset offers a 40 per cent improvement in CPU performance, while GPU performance has improved by up to 35 per cent compared to last year’s Snapdragon 695.
The chipset supports up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage.
The new Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 is the first chipset in the Snapdragon 6-series to come with the 7th-gen Qualcomm AI Engine. Further, the chipset incorporates an always-on 3rd Gen Qualcomm Sensing Hub and the next-gen Qualcomm Hexagon Tensor Accelerator.
Another first for the Snapdragon 6-series chipsets is the in-built Snapdragon X62 5G modem on the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1. The Snapdragon X62 5G Modem-RF system enables both mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G connectivity. Further, it brings 5G PowerSave 2.0 and global 5G multi-SIM support.
Moreover, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 comes with the Qualcomm’s FastConnect 6700 system, enabling Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 with LE audio.
As for the imaging, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 has a Qualcomm Spectra 12-bit Triple ISP. The ISP comes with support for up to three 13MP cameras, a 25MP+16MP dual camera system, or a single 48MP camera with support for staggered HDR image sensors. There is support for AI-based face detection, auto-focus, auto-exposure and hardware-based multi-frame noise reduction. The ISP also offers 4K HDR video recording at 30fps and slow-mo 720p at 240fps.
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 comes with support for up to FHD_ 120Hz display support and Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ fast charging technology.
Smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 will be coming to market in the first quarter of 2023, says Qualcomm.
Snapdragon 4 Gen 1: The budget 5G chipset for Android smartphones
The Snapdragon 4 Gen 1, built on the 6nm node process, features a 64-bit Kryo CPU clocked at up to 2GHz paired with an unspecified Adreno GPU. The chipset also gets LPDDR4X memory support with eMMC 5.1 and UFS 2.2 storage support.
The new Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 brings up to 10% improved GPU performance and up to 15% improved CPU performance over the Snapdragon 480.
While the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 does not get the latest 5G model, the Snapdragon X51 5G modem does add support for sub-6GHz 5G connectivity. The chipset also misses out on the Wi-Fi 6E support.
The Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 features a Qualcomm Spectra 12-bit Triple ISP with Multi-frame Noise Reduction (MFNR) and Triple concurrent photo and video capture. The ISP offers support for up to three 13MP cameras, a 25MP + 13MP dual camera system, or a single 32MP camera. The ISP also enables 1080p single video capture at 60FPS, 720p Slow slo-mo at 120FPS, and HEIC Photo capture.
iQoo, a spun-off brand of Vivo, is expected to unveil the first Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 powered smartphone dubbed iQoo Z6 Lite, launching on September 14 in India.
