Qualcomm CEO hints about one of the biggest changes Samsung may be planning with Galaxy S23 series – Times of India
Samsung’s Galaxy S series smartphones have come in two variants almost since the time the company introduced the flagship series. One powered by Samsung’s in-house Exynos chip and the other powered by Qualcomm’s top-tier Snapdragon chipsets. But now it seems like Samsung would be skipping its own Exynos chipsets for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon.
For a long time, the Snapdragon variant was reserved for the US while other regions were getting the Exynos one. However, that changed recently when Samsung launched the Galaxy S22 series. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 powered model was made available for other regions outside the states while the share of Exynos-powered models was reduced.
At the recent earnings call for the fiscal year 2022, Qualcomm’s head Christiano Amon said that the two companies – Qualcomm and Snapdragon – have signed a multi-year deal. As a part of this deal, Snapdragon chipsets will power the upcoming flagship Galaxy products.
“We’re very pleased to report that Qualcomm and Samsung have entered a new multiyear agreement starting in 2023, expanding the use of Snapdragon platforms for future premium Samsung Galaxy products globally,” responded Amon to one of the questions during the earnings call.
The press release announcing the partnership reads, “Qualcomm Incorporated and Samsung have agreed to extend their patent license agreement for 3G, 4G, 5G and upcoming 6G mobile technology through the end of 2030. Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, and Samsung also agreed to expand their collaboration with Snapdragon platforms for future premium Samsung Galaxy products, including smartphones, PCs, tablets, extended reality, and more.”
Christiano Amon further added, “And what I can say at this point is we were 75% on Galaxy S22 before the agreement. You should be thinking about we’re going to be much better than that on Galaxy S23 and beyond.”
We think this is our cue to believe that we might not see an Exynos-powered Galaxy S23 coming, at least in the global market. Samsung could use the much-rumoured Exynos for the upcoming Galaxy S23 series in its home market, South Korea. Not just Galaxy S series smartphones but Snapdragon chipsets will also power other Galaxy smartphones moving forward. Amon says that the partnership extends beyond smartphones, and we could also see Qualcomm powering “Galaxy books, Windows PCs, Galaxy tablets, future extended reality devices and other devices.”
