Although most of the wearables available today are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear chipsets, these processors haven’t yet delivered something extraordinary. Cut to now, we now have two new chipsets for wearables dubbed Snapdragon W5 Plus and W5 that are made to deliver exceptional performance and have been manufactured on an overhauled wearable platform.

Qualcomm launches two SoCs for the Snapdragon Wear series

Qualcomm launched two new SoCs for the wearable tech dubbed W5 and W5+ based on Gen 1. These SoCs are manufactured on a 4nm node that gives it a much higher gradient in terms of performance. The numbers as put forth by Qualcomm dictate a 2x breakthrough performance across the board when compared to its predecessor Snapdragon Wear 4100+.

The W5+ Gen 1 is capable of furnishing 50% longer battery size and takes 30% less real estate compared to its predecessors. The difference between W5 and W5+ is that the latter has AON Co-Processor which is designed to equip segment-specific wearables.

Moving on, the W5+ is equipped with four Cortex-A53 scores plus a fifth Cortex-M55 core clocked at 250MHz. There’s an A702 GPU clocked at 1GHz along with support for LPDDR4 at 2133Mhz RAM storage plus a new Machine Learning unit called U55.

The AON Co-Processor has a low-powered Bluetooth v5.3 support along with GNSS, Wi-Fi along with Hibernate, and Deep Sleep power states. There’s low-power mode LTE onboard W5+.

Collectively, the Snapdragon W5+ and W5 are 50% better in terms of power, 2X faster in terms of performance, 2X richer in features, and 30% smaller in size. Talking about its availability, Oppo and Mobvoi are two major OEMs to arrive with wearables using these SoCs and in fact, there are 25 smartwatch designs available in the pipeline.
