Qualcomm unveiled its latest processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset in December 2021. Since then, multiple smartphones using this SoC have been released. Now, GSMArena reports that Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ or ‘plus’, the successor of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor will be released in May 2022.
The report also mentions that devices powered by the upcoming processor could be announced immediately afterwards. So, if rumours are to be believed then we can expect the first Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ phones to be announced before the end of May and become available in June. The list of the first-phase OEMs includes — Lenovo, Motorola, OnePlus and Xiaomi.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 came with the model number SM8450 whereas the 8 Gen 1+ is likely to have the model number SM8475. This model number signifies that Qualcomm is expecting the new chipset to be a notable upgrade compared to its predecessor.
Rumours about the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ has been flying around since the latest Qualcomm chip was announced. The upcoming processor will be using TSMC’s 4nm node, instead of Samsung’s which was used in Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
This information fueled a lot of speculation about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ being less prone to overheating and performance throttle compared to its precursor as TSMC’s 4nm process is widely hailed to be more efficient.
The report also suggests that new 7-series chips will also be introduced around the same time. These chips are already available to smartphone makers’ for testing and product launch preparations like the 8 Gen 1+.
