Qualcomm’s new “Oryon” CPU to power the next-generation of Snapdragon chipsets – Times of India
Qualcomm has announced a new CPU for the Snapdragon platforms, the Oryon, at the annual Snapdragon Summit 2022. Succeeding the Kryo, the Oryon CPU will be seen next year, touted to debut with the next generation of Snapdragon chipsets, powering PCs, smartphones, and more. That is all the chip maker has told us about the Oryon.
Remember Qualcomm acquiring Nuvia, a company made of former Apple engineers who worked on the A- series chips? Well, the Oryon is the product that Nuvia was working on. The Gerard William of Qualcomm, earlier Nuvia, said on the stage that the new CPU core is a part of the one-architecture plan, so we can expect to see it power every Snapdragon-powered device, whether its PCs, mobile or XR headset.
Oryon to debut commercially with Snapdragon-powered PCs in 2024
The chipmaker had originally planned to ship the first batch of Oryon-powered chipsets for sampling around this time. But, the plan got delayed, so the chips are expected to reach OEMs for testing by January 2023, while the Oryon-powered chipsets should make it to the market in early 2023.
Oryon is Qualcomm’s answer to Apple’s M-series chips
Rumours were rife that Qualcomm has been working on a new playroom to power Windows PCs, codenamed hamosa. The chip was said to be based on Nuvia’s ‘Pheonix’ design, having a similar design and configuration as the Apple’s M1 Pro chip – with 8 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores. If the rumours are to be believed, the chip would come with support for dedicated graphics.
