Rafael Nadal copies Novak Djokovic as he refuses to confirm he will play Australian Open
The Australian Open gets underway on January 17, with Novak Djokovic looking to reclaim his tenth trophy in the famous tournament amongst others. But the Serb’s refusal to admit whether he will play or not has been mimicked by Rafael Nadal – who has also failed to confirm his attendance.
Nadal, 25, has only won The Australian Open once, in 2009.
The so-called “King of Clay” has won 13 of his 20 Grand Slam titles on French soil, but only once in Australia.
The tournament in Melbourne doesn’t appear to be his forte, although a win would see him leapfrog Djokovic and Roger Federer as the man to have won the most Grand Slam titles ever on 21
And with doubts over his appearance, Nadal took to the press to address fears over a potential absence.
“I need to think about it,” Nadal admitted.
“We have time to make a decision. Let’s see.
“I can’t guarantee 100 per cent that I will be there.”
The current world number six has not won a trophy since the 2020 French Open, where he did not drop a single set all tournament.
The Spaniard will be hoping history repeats itself in this year’s edition of the Australian Open.
But with his left foot injury, Nadal will be wary of aggravating such a problem.
Having faced Andy Murray just two days ago in an exhibition match, Nadal is slowly getting back to full fitness.
But the Spaniard is nowhere near ready to throw in the towel for his career just yet.
“I still believe that I will be competitive enough to give myself chances to compete for the things that I have been competing for the last 15 years,” he said.
“If not, personally it doesn’t make sense.
“I am not playing at all for money or just for fun, I am playing to keep achieving goals or at least to enjoy the process to try to achieve my goals.
“If then you don’t achieve, it’s fine, but the motivation and the passion is still there.”
