Rafael Nadal promptly took to social media after Carlos Alcaraz pulled off a stunning win over Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. Nadal was forced to sit out this year’s tournament at SW19 due to injury, and Alcaraz did his compatriot a favour by preventing Djokovic from pulling away in the all-time men’s Grand Slam charts.
Tennis fans were given their dream men’s final at the All England Club, with seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic taking on a supremely talented challenger in world No 1 Alcaraz.
The Spaniard had to dig deep to pull off a victory that seemed unlikely upon losing the first set 6-1, but he found another gear to prevail in a five-set bonanze that served up tennis of the highest quality.
Alcaraz has already banked two Grand Slam titles at 20 years old, and his stunning triumph inflicted Djokovic’s first defeat on Centre Court since 2013.
As the injured Nadal remains within one major title of Djokovic at the top of the all-time charts, the jubilant 37-year-old posted a classy statement on social media to congratulate Alcaraz on a statement victory.
“Congraulations Carlos Alcaraz,” he wrote on Instagram. “You have given us immense joy today and surely our pioneer in Spanish tennis, Manolo Santana, has also been cheering wherever he is as a member of Wimbledon whom you have joined today. A very strong hug and enjoy the moment, Champion!!!”
