Rafael Nadal’s pregnant wife in hospital and ‘could undergo operation’ days before US Open

Rafael Nadal’s wife, Mery Perello, has been admitted to hospital during the final stretch of her pregnancy in a worrying scare ahead of the US Open later this month. Nadal is currently in the United States, putting in his final preparations for the final Grand Slam of the season, while Perello has remained in Spain.

According to Diorio de Mallorca, Perello, 31 weeks pregnant with Nadal’s child, has entered a private clinic room in Palma. The 34-year-old could undergo an operation imminently on the recommendation of her doctors, precautionarily observing her to prevent complications at such a crucial stage of her pregnancy.

Despite Nadal being hundreds of miles away from his wife during the scare, she has been accompanied by relatives since her admission on Monday. Perello’s parents, sister-in-law Maribel Nadal and one of her best friends have been spotted in the clinic’s cafeteria this week.

It remains to be seen whether Perello’s situation will impact Nadal’s involvement at this year’s US Open, but he appears to be gearing up as usual as of Wednesday. The draw for the 2022 showcase at Flushing Meadows will be held at 5pm on Thursday, with the Spaniard set to be among the top seeds.

The revelation about Nadal and Perello’s pregnancy emerged in mid-June after Hola magazine published images of the couple on holiday. They showed the pair on a yacht with their friends, and Perello, in a bathing suit, bore noticeable maternity curves.

Days later, Nadal confirmed the news in a press conference and asked for continued privacy during the pregnancy. They have been together for almost two decades and married for almost three years and are now ready to start a family in the twilight years of the Spaniard’s illustrious career.

The couple are expecting a boy in October, a celebration that will coincide with their third wedding anniversary. Nadal will be hoping he can add his record-extending 23rd career Grand Slam, fifth US Open and third Slam out of four this season to add to the jubilant vibe.

He will enter the US Open as the second seed behind world number one Daniil Medvedev, rightfully the tournament favourite given his status as defending champion after denying Novak Djokovic the Calendar Slam last year. Carlos Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Djokovic make up the top five. However, the Serb could yet withdraw if he can’t enter the United States due to his vaccination status.
