Raiders owner Mark Davis wants NFL to release findings of Washington Football Team investigation

Raiders owner Mark Davis on Wednesday broke his silence regarding the NFL investigation that led Raiders coach Jon Gruden to resign.

Gruden resigned following the emergence of emails he wrote starting in 2011 that included racist, homophobic and misogynistic language. The emails were in correspondence with former Washington Football Team president Bruce Allen and were uncovered as part of the NFL’s investigation into Washington’s toxic workplace environment.

The league, which reviewed around 650,000 emails, fined Washington $10 million. Owner Dan Snyder has not participated in the day-to-day activities of his team, either. No other team or individual has been implicated or punished as a result of the investigation.

Since Gruden resigned on Oct. 11, Davis had yet to speak publicly about the investigation or its impact on his organization. The NFL owners meeting began on Tuesday, and the topic of the NFL investigation into Washington was a big topic of conversation, including whether the report would be released to the public. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday quashed any such notion, however, announcing the report would not be released to the public.

During the Wednesday meeting, Davis met with various members of the media to discuss his thoughts on the investigation findings. During his media availability, he expressed his desire for the league to release the findings of its investigation.

Right now, there is only an oral report of the findings. Davis said he thinks the report should be published for the public to see.

“I think that there should be (a written report), yeah. Especially with some of the things that were, I guess, charged,” Davis said, via ESPN. “Yeah, I believe so, I think people deserve (a written report), especially people that were, quote, victims.”

So far, only the information in Gruden’s emails have been released. Since Goodell’s announcement on Tuesday that the report would not be written, there has been push from some WFT ex-employees to release the findings. Davis is the first NFL owner to publicly push for this.

During his conversation with the media on Wednesday, Davis was asked if he felt that the Raiders had received special attention in regard to the investigation, almost as if they were being singled out.

“We’re Raiders,” Davis responded. “We’re used to this and that’s what our life is about. But it is disappointing.”

Davis admitted the NFL didn’t let Davis and the Raiders organization know about their findings on Gruden. Instead, Davis found out in a phone interview with the Wall Street Journal only a day before the emails were leaked. This was the part that upset him.

“I believe that if we had gotten the information earlier in the summer, when (the NFL) learned about it, it would have been a lot easier for everyone involved,” Davis said. “Then we could have done something before the season, rather than in the middle of the season.”
