Ralf Rangnick and Luke Shaw’s disturbing comments evidence Man Utd’s broken dressing room

If some of Manchester United’s recent performances have provided evidence of a disjointed squad then some of the comments from inside the camp have hammered home the point. The Red Devils were woeful in their 1-0 defeat by Wolves at Old Trafford on Monday and have so much work to do if they are to qualify for next season’s Champions League. 

Joao Moutinho scored the only goal of the game nine minutes before the end but Wolves could have had more. David De Gea made an excellent save to deny Ruben Neves in the first half.  

This was a United performance that produced just two shots on target. One of those was Bruno Fernandes’ well-saved free kick in added-time.  

Indeed, the Portuguese midfielder, who came off the bench, struck the bar with an excellent opportunity midway through the second half – but still United struggled in front of goal.  

There was no better proof of how fragmented Ralf Rangnick’s attack is than Jadon Sancho’s first-half chance.  

The winger strode forward with the ball and had Cristiano Ronaldo screaming to play him in on goal.

Instead, Sancho dummied a pass and went for goal himself. His tame effort was blocked and Ronaldo threw his arms up in frustration.  

In a post-match interview, defender Luke Shaw bluntly accepted that his team-mates looked like a bunch of individuals.  

“We didn’t have many options on the ball and we weren’t on the front foot. We have to put more pressure on them, we have to have intensity,” the England star reflected to Sky Sports. 

“Us players, we have been here a long time, maybe tonight we struggled, I didn’t think we were all there together.  

“You look at the players we have, we have unbelievable quality but sometimes quality is not enough.

“He was exceptional, I am very happy for him and he deserves it.” 

Shaw’s comments were only compounded by his boss Rangnick, who, in praising Greenwood, had a dig at the rest of his squad.  

Many inside Old Trafford were stunned when Greenwood, who generally played well, was substituted. 

“His effort and performance was not outstanding,” the former RB Leipzig boss said, “but at least he was one of the better players today.” 

Improving relations in his squad now appears to be Rangnick’s top priority.
