NEW DELHI: With his sharp googly and attacking mindset, young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi has been one of the finds for India in T20Is this year. Since his debut against the West Indies in Kolkata this year, where he bagged the ‘Player of the Match’ award, Bishnoi has picked 16 wickets in 10 T20Is, averaging 17.12 and at an economy rate of 7.08.
Many expected Bishnoi to be in the Indian side for the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia next month. But it wasn’t to be as Bishnoi was named as one of the four reserves for the mega event in October-November.
Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar feels Bishnoi should not be disheartened by not getting into the squad of 15 for the World Cup as he has age on his side.
He urged the Jodhpur-based leg-spinner to now perform in coming matches in such a way that he becomes ‘undroppable’.

The captain and opener. One of the batting mainstays who likes to bat in Australia with the ball coming nicely on to the bat.

The vice-captain and his captain’s opening partner most probably. Had a bad Asia Cup by his standards. Stylish and not to be counted out.

The batting mainstay. Back in form after scoring his 71st international century in the Asia Cup. Unstoppable if he gets going.

India’s own 360 degree player. Has a wide array of shots and can punish any bowling attack on his day. Vital cog in the Indian middle order.

Raw but exciting. One of the five centurions for India in T20Is. Has the power to clear the big grounds in Australia.

The Maverick. Has great memories of touring Australia. Had pulled off a sensational Test series victory at the Gabba in January 2021.

Story that dream comebacks are made of. One of the two players in the current Indian squad who were part of the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 (apart from Rohit Sharma). Excellent finisher and safe keeper.

His presence gives Team India a totally different look. The ability to hit big shots with the bat and bowl at 140 clicks make him a match-winner.

Back in India’s scheme of things, can be crucial in drying up the runs and getting crucial breakthroughs using his experience and skills.

The leg-spinner is back in form and among wickets. Though he took only 4 wickets in 4 games in Asia Cup, 3 of them came in one match. Can turn the ball from the rough and can bowl well in tandem with Ashwin.

The like for like replacement for the injured Ravindra Jadeja. Crafty with his left-arm spin and handy with the bat. But India will miss Jadeja the fielder on the big Australian grounds.

The pace spearhead. Back in the team after an injury. A match-winner with the ball, dangerous with the new one and lethal with the old one. Expert in bowling yorkers at will.

Can make the new white ball swing and can trouble the batsmen with his incoming deliveries. An able and experienced pacer to lead the Indian bowling attack with Bumrah.

Back in the team after an injury. Is India’s second-highest wicket-taker in T20Is this year with 19 wickets. Is a potent death-overs bowling option.

The left-arm pacer can dry up runs in the slog overs by bowling full length deliveries. Brings in a variety to the Indian pace bowling attack.

His exclusion from the first 15 is a big surprise, though he has been named among the stand-by players who will travel with the team to Australia.

Batsman Shreyas Iyer, leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi and pacer Deepak Chahar (apart from Shami) are the four standby players for the tournament.

The head coach. The former Indian batting great brings in tons of experience of playing in Australia and would be keen to erase the blip of an early Asia Cup exit.

“Well, he has got age on his side. There is another T20 World Cup in a couple of year’s time (2024, in West Indies and USA). There are so many T20 World Cups that he can play in the future. He should now perform in such a way that he becomes undroppable. So that’s the only way to look at it. He is a young man, it’s a good experience for him to know he can’t get into every team,” said Gavaskar to India Today after India’s squad announcement.
Further delving into India’s squad for the showpiece event, Gavaskar has backed pace all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who has delivered with bat and ball in India’s recent T20I victories, to be the team’s trump card and replicate what former all-rounder and head coach Ravi Shastri did for the side in winning the 1985 Benson & Hedges World Championship of Cricket in Australia.
“Yes, I think he could possibly do what Ravi Shastri did in 1985 where Ravi was the outstanding performer with both bat and ball in the entire tournament. Some good catches as well. Hardik Pandya is capable of doing that. Don’t forget, at mid-off, he affects some electrifying run-outs as well.”
“Direct hits at the bowler’s end, catching the batter inches short. It’s not just the bowling and the batting aspects of Hardik Pandya, the fielding aspect that could turn the game India’s way. I won’t be surprised if he is like the Ravi Shastri of 1985, if he is like the Champion of Champions.”
Gavaskar signed off by saying India looked like a nice unit with the addition of right-arm pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel while urging fans to support the 15-man squad for the tournament.
“This looks like a very good team. With Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel coming in, it looks like India will be able to defend their totals. India have had problems in trying to defend totals. These two stalwarts coming in will certainly give the edge to India when defending totals.”
“Deepak Chahar is one name that stands out, but they have also retained Arshdeep Singh, who gives a left-arm option in the attack. Like I said, it’s a good selection. We can always crib about this thing and that thing. But now the selection is done, this is India’s team. So let’s not ask why not this, why not that? We should back this team 100 percent. Now that the selection is done, it’s our team, back them 100 percent.”
