Ravichandran Ashwin makes history, becomes first Indian to dismiss father and son in test cricket

Ashwin’s journey began in 2011 when he made his Test debut, and during that inaugural appearance, he achieved a significant milestone by dismissing Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the father of Tagenarine Chanderpaul. Now, twelve years later, Ashwin found himself face to face with Tagenarine and bowled a brilliant delivery to dismiss him as well.

What makes this accomplishment even more intriguing is that the Chanderpauls feature three times in the unique list of a father-son duo being dismissed by a bowler. Apart from Ashwin, the remaining two bowlers to achieve this feat are Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc and South African off-spinner Simon Harmer, both of whom succeeded in dismissing the Chanderpauls.

Joining the exclusive club of bowlers who dismissed a father and son duo in Test matches are England all-rounder Ian Botham and Pakistan legend Wasim Akram. Their feat mirrored Ashwin’s accomplishment as they dismissed the New Zealand duo of Lance and Chris Cairns.

As the first day of the opening Test progressed, Ashwin’s international wicket tally stood at an impressive 699 across all formats, with 476 of them secured in Test cricket. This milestone further solidifies Ashwin’s status as one of the premier bowlers of his generation and adds yet another remarkable chapter to his exceptional career.
