Red Bull call for F1 rule change despite Michael Masi’s favourable Max Verstappen decision
Red Bull’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has suggested the FIA take a look at the way their system works during race weekends, calling on the new FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem to make significant changes in 2022.
It comes as F1 managing director Ross Brawn says they are to rule out teams bombarding the FIA’s race director Michael Masi during races, with Ben Sulayem taking over from Jean Todt just five days after the season finale in mid-December.
“We will stop this contact [between team bosses and Masi] next year,” confirmed Brawn to Auto Motor und Sport.
“It’s unacceptable that team bosses put Michael under such pressure during the race.
“It’s like the coaches negotiating with the referee in football.”
Mercedes’ Toto Wolff and his Red Bull counterpart Christian Horner were both heard on the radio to Masi during the final race in Abu Dhabi, trying to dictate how the race played out.

“Obviously, you hear Christian coming on the radio, to the referee saying ‘hey, we just need one more lap of racing’, that is not ideal.
“That is the type of thing we need to try and sort out for next year and get rid of that.
“They shouldn’t even be speaking to the referee at all. It wouldn’t happen in football.
“You can’t have the manager during the match calling the referee all the time. That doesn’t work.”
