Red Bull ‘disappointed’ in Toto Wolff’s extreme tactics comment in Lewis Hamilton battle

Red Bull boss Christian Horner says he’s “disappointed” to hear comments from his Mercedes counterpart Toto Wolff after the Austrian claimed, “Whoever is in front [on points] is absolutely going to try to do the same as in the Senna-Prost years”.

Referencing the infamous battle between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, which was at its most intense when the pair were teammates at McLaren-Honda in 1988 and 1989, Wolff refused to rule out another fiery moment between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen before the season finishes.

Both championships were decided by the Senna and Prost pair colliding, but Horner felt it would be a “horrible” way to see a championship decided.

“I was disappointed in that because I think everybody would hate to see a championship decided in a gravel trap,” Horner told Sky Sports F1. “Our intention is to really fight this championship all the way and our determination is to try and win it on the track.

“It would be so disappointing, we’ve had two incidents already this year.”

“We had some great races. I think Austin demonstrated these two drivers at their very best, I think that’s what we want to see, it’s more rewarding for the drivers, for the team.

“So it’d be horrible to see a championship decided that way.”

Earlier in the weekend, Hamilton had denied any suggestion he would crash into Verstappen to win the title, stating he “never has” and “never would want to” win a championship that way.

“We have never won a championship in that way, I have never won a championship in that way and I would never want to,” he said.

“From my perspective and point of view, I am here to win and in the right way and that is through sheer skill, determination, and hard work.”

With 133 points still up for grabs across the remaining races, Wolff told the Daily Mail: “If it was to come to the scenario of the last race in Abu Dhabi, and they were to be racing each other for the title, whoever is in front is absolutely going to try to do the same as in the Senna-Prost years.
