Red Bull urged to reconsider Pierre Gasly alongside Max Verstappen despite frosty exit

AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost has praised Pierre Gasly after making a huge impact at the team over the 2021 season with a message to their sister team Red Bull. The Frenchman has had a bumpy ride in Formula One so far after he was called up from junior team Toro Rosso ahead of the 2019 season.

But he was quickly demoted from the senior outfit midway through the 2019 campaign and was left with a bitter taste in his mouth.

But, determined to succeed in F1, Gasly continued to push for success at Alpha Tauri, with a podium finish in Brazil, a race win at Monza, and P3 at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as he looked to showcase his talent to the top team.

Red Bull have no interest in replacing current world champion Max Verstappen, but the seat alongside the Dutchman has been something of a revolving door.

With the seat currently occupied by Sergio Perez, there seems no reason to change the line-up, but at just 25 years old, his boss Tost says Gasly’s stand-out performances have really elevated him as a driver.

“He has fantastic potential,” Tost told GPFans.

“What’s important is I still have the feeling he can improve because that’s decisive then if you are on this level. If we provide him next year with a competitive car, he will be there 100 per cent.

“From the driving, he has now the experience of how to set up the car, how to manage the tyres, he can read the race, which is very important, he is on the radio, the questions he is asking, and he made this year another big step forward, a real big step forward.

“Once more, if our car works [in 2022], he will be there.”

Gasly was axed from Red Bull ahead of the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix, with Alex Albon taking his place at the team sitting in sixth place in the driver standings with 63 points.

Speaking of his time at the team, however, Gasly admitted it was far from plain sailing.
