Max Verstappen extended his lead at the top of the F1 Drivers’ Championship standings on Sunday as he cruised to victory at the Canadian Grand Prix. The Dutchman is now 69 points ahead of his Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez after winning six of the first eight races of the year. And with more than a third of the season completed, Verstappen will fancy his chances of bagging a third consecutive world title.
Second-place Perez will have something to say about that, however, and continued to put pressure on Verstappen by finishing second in Canada. Meanwhile, a rejuvenated Fernando Alonso continues to impress following his switch to Aston Martin, while Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton has improved after his 2022 woes.
Hamilton’s F1 future is currently up in the air as his contract with the Silver Arrows is set to expire at the end of the year. But Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle has dismissed claims that the 38-year-old could end up at Red Bull next season.
Hamilton may not have to jump ship to catch Verstappen, however, after FIA director Nikolas Tombazis warned the two-time world champion that rival teams could catch him up if they perfect the Red Bull-style sidepod design.
