Reports Suggest Ubisoft Might Be the Next Big Video Game Developer to get Acquired

Acquisitions are not new in the gaming industry, they have been there throughout, but have just started attracting attention. Sony just acquired Bungie and Microsoft just made the most expensive gaming acquisition in history when they purchased Activision-Blizzard. It seems like this acquisition cycle is not done yet and there is another big player in the market that is waiting to be scooped up.

The company in question is none other than the developer of the iconic Assassins Creed franchise, Ubisoft. According to a report by Bloomberg, few private equity firms including Blackstone Inc. and KKR & Co. have shown interest in a possible takeover of Ubisoft. It seems like the company hasn’t shed much light on this information and people do not know whether they are open to this deal or not.

Another detail that point towards a potential sale is a report by Kotaku, which talks about Ubisoft employees mentioning various sections of the company being audited. These audits are assumed to be signs of a potential sale coming in soon. Another detail that has been revealed is that, the company has been facing issues with production and also their stock prices have been dropping drastically in recent times.

In the past, the CEO has fought off a take over from the French entertainment company, Vivendi, in 2018 and managed to keep control of the company. Yves Guillemot and the Guillemot family own 15% of the company and it seems like they are ready to part with it now. The CEO mentioned in their latest earnings call that the company is open to reviewing offers for the purchase, but has not confirmed or denied whether potential buyers have approached them.

It seems like one of the behemoths of the industry, PlayStation or Xbox are most likely to scoop up Ubisoft and extend their line of exclusives. It will be smart move as Ubisoft already has established franchises and a loyal player base. Therefore, adding a line of Ubisoft games to the console’s exclusive roster is a fairly advantageous deal. As of now no information has been officially revealed and the players will just have to be patient and wait for an official announcement from Ubisoft to know what lies ahead for the future of the publisher.
