Return to Silent Hill Movie Will Star Jeremy Irvine as James, Filming Begins Next Month

Return to Silent Hill will begin filming in April, with Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson in the lead roles.

A few months after it was confirmed to be in the works, Return to Silent Hill has received some exciting new updates. First up, Irvine has joined the cast as James, a man described as being “broken after being separated from his one true love,” played by Anderson.

Per the plot summary, a mysterious letter calls James back to Silent Hill in search of his lost love, only for him to find “a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil.” He will descend “deeper into the darkness” and encounter “terrifying figures both familiar and new.”

Irvine made his feature film debut in 2011 starring in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. His other acting credits include The Railway Man, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and Billionaire Boys Club. He also portrayed John Randolph Bentley in the Jason Bourne offshoot Treadstone.

Anderson, on the other hand, is best known for her roles as Eleanor Bonneville in Jigsaw, and Elaine Grey in X-Men: Dark Phoenix. She also starred as Jenna Betancourt in the horror anthology series The Purge, which ran for two seasons before being cancelled in May 2020.

Speaking on Irvine and Anderson’s casting, director Christophe Gans said he was “delighted” to have the pair on board, while producer Victor Hadida talked about his hopes for the horror reboot, which will enter production next month in Germany and Eastern Europe.

“Return to Silent Hill is a mythological love story about someone so deeply in love, they”re willing to go to hell to save someone,” Gans said. “I’m delighted to have the wonderful talents of both Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson take us on this journey into a psychological horror world that I hope will both satisfy and surprise fans of Silent Hill.”

“Christophe and I have been working closely with our partners at Konami, as they update the video game, to also create a version of Silent Hill for the theatrical audiences of today,” added Hadida. “You will still find the iconic monsters – but there will also be new designs. We are confident that this new film and Konami’s updated game together will propel the franchise forward for years to come.”

As well as directing, Gans (who helmed the original Silent Hill in 2006) has also written the script for the next installment with Sandra Vo-Anh and William Josef Schneider. Hadida will produce under his Davis Films banner, with Hassell Free Productions’ Molly Hassell and David Wulf.

Return to Silent Hill is based on Silent Hill 2, the second and most popular game in KONAMI’s successful video game series. The psychological horror franchise is expanding with both the upcoming movie adaptation and “multiple” new games that are in the works.
