At San Diego Comic-Con 2023, producers for Rick and Morty revealed new details on the upcoming seventh season, including the return of Squanchy.
During a panel to celebrate the series’ tenth anniversary, Rick and Morty producer Steve Levy revealed that the seventh season of Rick and Morty will release “pretty dang soon,” according to Levy. A clip also played during the panel; it was a cold open featuring the alien race Numbericons and Water-T. Levy also revealed that season eight of the series has been written, and season 9 is partially written.
The panel also revealed that the season seven premiere will see the return of Rick’s gang of friends, including Squanchy and Mr. Poopy Butthole. “Bird Person, Squanchy… Gene… Rick’s favorite friend… all of your favorites… Gearhead… It wouldn’t be the full crew without Mr. Poopy Butthole. So there’s a lot to look forward to this season, and I promise that Squanchy will Squanch again,” Levy said.
Levy also shared a minor update on the voice recasts after Adult Swim fired series co-creator Justin Roiland, who also voiced several characters on the show, including the titular characters Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith. “We are closing in on the end of our process of the recast,” Levy said during the panel. “It’s going to be great… I’m thoroughly impressed… That’s the thing I don’t want to be overshadowed.”
When asked about the voice recasts for Roiland’s other show Solar Opposites, Levy revealed that the recasts will be “soundalikes” but reassured fans that “the characters are the same characters.”
Earlier this year, Roiland was charged with domestic violence. However, in March, the charges brought against Roiland were dropped.
