Riot Games and Ubisoft Team Up to Battle Toxicity in Games through ‘Zero Harm in Comms’ Research Initiative
The gaming scene currently is flooded with toxic players, who are disrupting the gameplay experience for the average gamer. Many game developers are trying to figure out a way to put a halt to such behavior. This includes Riot Games and Ubisoft, who have just announced a partnership to tackle toxicity in online gaming through their ‘Zero Harm in Comms’ research initiative.
Their partnership will involve creating a database by gathering in-game data. This will help in training an AI to detect and resolve disruptive behavior in the game. They have also stated that any gathered data that identifies an individual will be removed before sharing.
Zero Harm in Comms research project aims towards helping all individuals that dwell in video games. The mission is to “create gaming structures that foster more rewarding social experiences and avoid harmful interactions.”
Both Riot Games and Ubisoft are a member of the Fair Play Alliance, which is a global coalition of gaming professionals and companies committed to developing quality games. Both of these companies believe that communication and collaboration in the gaming industry is the only way to better the social dynamics of online games.
Both Ubisoft and Riot Games have a big catalog of competitive titles under their belt. So, the database gathered from their titles should help cover a wide range of players, which in turn will help train their AI better.
Riot is also investing in AI systems which automatically detect harmful behavior. At the moment the scale of their challenge is only going to get bigger due to the increase in popularity of video games globally. We are waiting to see if these two big players of the industry are able to bring a considerable change to today’s online gaming environment.
