Robert Downey Jr asked about his potential return in Iron Man 4
Fifteen years after the release of Iron Man, the movie which established the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Robert Downey Jr’s portrayal of the titular character, continues to be a fan favorite. Though we saw Iron Man sacrificing himself at the end of the 2019 film, Avengers: Endgame, fans haven’t stopped asking if we’ll get to see Robert Downey Jr don the iron suit once again. In a recent interview during an event for Downey’s Dream Cars, the actor was questioned about his return as Iron Man to the MCU. Here’s more on what he had to say.
Robert Downey Jr on Iron Man 4
At a recent event, ExtraTV posed questions to the Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr about his 2008 film Tropic Thunder. The interviewer asked Downey about the chances of him working with Tom Cruise if there was to be a sequel to the movie. This eventually led to a question about Iron Man 4, which the actor dodged his way out of.
He asked, rather enquired instead if Tom Cruise wanted to do Iron Man 4. Downey then went on to add “Tom, don’t take it!”, just as he rushed out of the frame.
It is worth noting that Tom Cruise was in fact approached by Marvel Studios to play Iron Man before Robert Downey Jr was finalised for the role. However, he reportedly declined the offer, which eventually gifted us the iconic appearance of Downey as Iron Man. But given that MCU Phase 4, and now Phase 5 has been exploring the multiverse, the chances of dead characters making a comeback are higher than ever. Like for example, Downey or Scarlett Johansson returning as Iron Man and Black Widow respectively.
The multiverse has also opened avenues for different iterations of characters, which brings us to the rumors around Tom Cruise’s debut in the MCU as Iron Man. Back during the development of Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, pictures of Tom Cruise in motion capture suit, allegedly from the set of the movie, had surfaced online, sparking a new wave of rumors. While did not see Tom Cruise in Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, or Robert Downey Jr in the MCU since Endgame, fans will keep guessing and coming up with theories. As Downey keeps dodging the questions, the rumor mill continues to churn.
