Roger Federer issues injury comeback update after seeing Rafael Nadal win record 21st Slam
“So I think this question is better answered maybe by April / May but for now of course the drive is there, I’m really motivated to do my work when I’m allowed to do.
“I did it all again this morning, I’m back in the gym again tomorrow and I’m working as hard as I’m allowed to so it’s still good times even though it’s a little bit slow because I would love to do way more but the doctors and everybody’s holding me back a little bit.”
His update comes after his Grand Slam record was surpassed for the first time by long-time friend and rival Nadal.
Federer broke Sampras’ previous record of 14 Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon 2009 and has since gone on to win 20.
Nadal and Djokovic have been able to tie his record but it wasn’t broken until Sunday, when the world No 5 won his second Australian Open title to take the lead in the Grand Slam race for the first time with a historic 21st title.
The Swiss star posted a heartfelt message to congratulate his friend and rival, writing: “To my friend and great rival, Rafael Nadal, heartfelt congratulations on becoming the first man to win 21 Grand Slam singles titles.
“A few months ago we were joking about both being on crutches. Amazing. Never underestimate a great champion.”
