Roger Federer names two favourite F1 drivers as Verstappen misses out
Roger Federer revealed himself as a Mercedes fan as he attended the Miami Grand Prix. The Swiss star swapped tennis for Formula One as he enjoyed an outing on race day and discussed his favourite players. Despite complementing Max Verstappen’s “incredible work”, he snubbed the two-time World Champion for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.
Federer has been putting his free time to good use following his retirement in September, as he appeared in Miami for the Grand Prix on Sunday. The former world No 1 said it was his third time at F1 as he finally had the chance to attend more races.
“This is my third time, yes,” he told Sky Sports. “I’ve been to Abu Dhabi the big race with Hamilton and [Nico] Rosberg at the time and then I did Barcelona qualifying last year which I really enjoyed as well.
“It was a bit more relaxed away from the big race and then now here so it’s great fun to be back, having finally a bit of time to do things like this as well.” One of the legends of his own sport, Federer was also quizzed over his thoughts on the drivers as he named Hamilton and Russell as his favourites.
Asked whether the Miami GP was Verstappen’s “time”, Federer lauded his dominance over the last two seasons but gushed about Hamilton and Russell. “Well it seems like it,” the 41-year-old responded.
“It seems like he’s obviously got a great car, he’s an amazing driver too.” But he shared his wish for Hamilton to do well despite qualifying 13th.
Federer added: “I still hope for Lewis he’s going to have a great race here and hopefully another great season. He’s been amazing, I’ve also gotten to meet Lewis on many occasions.”
