Roger Federer’s coach offers Carlos Alcaraz help to stake his claim in GOAT race
Roger Federer’s former coach has told Carlos Alcaraz he needs more consistency in his service games. Severin Luthi has explained the key area of the Spaniard’s game that needs improving.
Alcaraz stunned Novak Djokovic to win Wimbledon last month, securing the second Grand Slam of his fledgling career. The 20-year-old will also hope to topple the Serb at next month’s US Open, bidding to retain his title.
Luthi, who oversaw the final 15 years of Federer’s career, admits he enjoys watching Alcaraz. However, he believes the youngster can improve during his own service games. Improving that aspect of his game could help him enter the race to be crowned the greatest player of all time – a frequent debate involving Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
“Absolutely. I like watching him, he plays in a variety of ways, something always happens when he’s on the pitch,” Luthi told Blick. “I really like his energy. He also still has ups and downs in his service games. But of course he is a very complete player.”
He added: “He definitely has everything to win many Grand Slam tournaments. And yet we don’t know what will happen in two years.
“What if he hurts himself? What if another one comes in a few years that we all say is even more incredible? And: We can’t estimate how someone reacts to the great success so early. In sports, we always live in the moment. I learned that in my career.”
Alcaraz will likely take on board Luthi’s comments, especially after being described as a ‘quick learner’ by former Wimbledon champion Andy Murray.
Meanwhile, Luthi revealed that he had received offers to coach other players following Federer’s retirement last year. However, he chose to take time out as he did not want to follow another player on tour in the immediate aftermath of Federer’s swansong.
