Rohit Sharma, Shardul Thakur coach Dinesh Lad wins Dronacharya award | Cricket News – Times of India
MUMBAI: In a just reward, Rohit Sharma and Shardul Thakur‘s childhood coach Dinesh Lad was on Monday bestowed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports with the Dronacharya award after being recommended for it by the Team India captain and allrounder. The awardees will receive their awards from the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the capital on November 30.
Lad’s name for the Dronacharya, awarded to the best coaches of a sport, had also been recommended by the Mumbai Cricket Association.
“I’m very much thankful to my students like Rohit, Shardul, Siddhesh Lad (his son), Harmeet Singh and others. I sent a message to Rohit and Shardul for their support. It’s because of them that I’ve won this award. I’m thankful to their parents too for showing their faith in me. I’m happy because all the years of my life that I’ve given to sport has been justly rewarded. I’m the happiest man today because 32 years back, in 1990, my guru, my coach Ramakant Achrekar had won this award, and he was the last cricket coach from Mumbai to have won this award. I’m only the second person from Mumbai to win the Dronacharya award since then,” an elated, emotional Lad told TOI.
Besides producing Rohit and Shardul, Lad has coached many cricketers who went on to play Mumbai for a number of years, at the Swami Vivekananda School in Borivali, where he’s still the coach. Lad is also currently the coach of the Mumbai under-14 team.
“I’ve never coached thinking that I’ll win an award or earn money out of it. I’ve been coaching for the last three decades for free-I’ve never taken money from parents. This award is the biggest reward of my life. I’ve been left speechless,” said.
“If this award can spur the Maharashtra government to allot to me a bigger ground near my residence, in Borivali or Kandivali-the ground where I currently coach my school kids is too small- I’d be eternally grateful to it,” Lad urged.
