Ronaldo moans at Man Utd ally Fernandes before stitching up McTominay

Cristiano Ronaldo made clear his unhappiness to his team-mate Bruno Fernandes after the Manchester United midfielder failed to pass the Portuguese star during their clash with Arsenal. Ronaldo was brought off the bench by Erik ten Hag and took only minutes to become frustrated with his compatriot when the hosts had a chance to score.

The 37-year-old was summoned from the bench with his side leading 2-1, replacing Jadon Sancho after Marcus Rashford after his team-mate had put United back in front.

And he felt he had a chance to score just minutes after coming on, with Fernandes pouncing on an error from Aaron Ramsdale after a poor pass out to Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Fernandes had the chance to square it to Ronaldo, who would have had a simple tap-in if the playmaker passed. He decided to shoot instead and his lobbed effort was beaten away by Ramsdale.

And Ronaldo, who has been known to make his feelings clear to team-mates when they ignore a passing opportunity, threw out his arms in frustration towards Fernandes.

That was only the beginning as far as the striker’s miserable cameo was concerned as a minute later he stitched up Scott McTominay with a back-heel in the middle of the park, which saw him robbed of possession by Gabriel Jesus. McTominay was forced to take a yellow card by body-slamming Jesus to the floor.

Ronaldo had the chance to break in one on one with Ramsdale, only for Fred to overhit the pass and again, Ronaldo could hardly contain his emotions.

But it was overall a joyous day for Ten Hag’s side, with Rashford scoring twice and debutant Antony, an £84m signing from Ajax, scoring the other goals to hand the hosts a fourth successive win.

United had taken the lead when Rashford supplied the ball out wide to Antony and he coolly slotted into the corner.

But Arsenal found a deserved equaliser through Bukayo Saka, who swept home after Raphael Varane denied Gabriel Jesus.

United stepped things up a gear with a sumptuous pass from Fernandes putting Rashford through on goal and his deflected strike bounced into the corner, before the 24-year-old got his second late on.

It means United are now just three points behind the league leaders, having lost their opening two matches of the season.
