Rory McIlroy backed to ‘definitely’ win Masters by Tiger Woods
Woods, now 47, always insisted he would never become a ceremonial golfer and would always want to compete for titles. But he said: “Last year I didn’t win the tournament, but for me to be able to come back and play was a small victory in itself.”
The American won his 15th Major title here in 2019 and he claimed his course knowledge here gives him hope of writing another chapter in his long history here. “I’ve gone through so many different scenarios in my head,” he said. “You know I don’t sleep very well, so going through it and rummaging through the data bank and how to hit shots from each and every place and rehearsing it; that’s the only way that I can compete here.
“I don’t have the physical tournaments under my belt. I haven’t played that much, no. But if there’s any one golf course that I can come back, like I did last year, it’s here, just because I know the golf course. And hopefully it will help me this week.”
Woods initially claimed he did not have any “influence” on Excel Sports Management having no LIV clients on their books. “I certainly have had my opinion with Steiny (Mark Steinberg) and the company, but that’s about Excel and what they want to do. No, I do not have any direct influence with them. Indirect influence? I have my opinions, yes.”
