Rune matches Alcaraz record as Big Three successors become clearer
Holger Rune has matched Carlos Alcaraz’s 2022 record as he became the second teenager after the world No 1 to lift multiple titles this season. The 19-year-old upset Stefanos Tsitsipas to be crowned the Stockholm Open champion on Sunday after beating Alexander Zverev earlier in the year to win his maiden title. Just one week older than Alcaraz, Rune is showing that he is up for becoming a successor to the Big Three reign.
Rune capped off an impressive week in Stockholm by winning his second career title on Sunday, and his second of the season. The Dane defeated second seed Cam Norrie and fifth seed Alex de Minaur to reach his third final of the year, where he defeated top seed Tsitsipas 6-4 6-4.
At just 19 years old, the world No 25 became the second teenager to win multiple titles this season after Alcaraz, who has enjoyed a breakout year by winning two Masters 1000s and two ATP 500s before lifting his maiden Grand Slam crown at the US Open. And Rune has started to cement himself as one of the young stars to take over when the Big Three era officially ends.
Rune was born exactly one week before Alcaraz – mirroring Djokovic and Murray whose birthdays are just seven days within each other – though his success in 2022 has gone under the radar compared to the Spaniard’s exceptional achievements. He reached his firth Grand Slam quarter-final at the French Open, where he also beat Tsitsipas.
