Ryder Cup caddie ‘barred’ from talking about Rory McIlroy clash in fresh twist
USA captain Zach Johnson has reportedly ‘barred’ Joe LaCava from speaking to the media to avoid questions over his clash with Rory McIlroy on Saturday evening. LaCava got on the wrong side of McIlroy as tensions were rising late in the day on Saturday.
McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick were embroiled in a tight clash with Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark with Europe looking to maintain their six-point lead. But Cantlay holed an incredible putt to leave McIlroy needing to make his to half the match.
While McIlroy was still preparing for his putt, Team USA celebrated wildly as they began waving their hats around to mock the trolling Cantlay had received throughout the day. LaCava appeared to overstep the mark with his celebrations though as he continued to wave his hat around while walking towards McIlroy’s line.
The European golfer took umbrage with Cantlay’s caddie, telling him to move out of the way. McIlroy ended up missing his putt and his frustration spilled out in the car park afterwards as he was seen confronting the US team with Shane Lowry having to hold him back.
It added another bit of spice to Sunday’s action with Team USA fired up with the much-needed point to give themselves a chance of an almighty comeback. Europe were managing to hold on, although Cantlay helped lead the American’s charge on the points board.
LaCava was approached soon after Cantlay’s round finished to ask about the incident with McIlroy. But Golf Digest claim USA captain Johnson ‘barred’ LaCava from speaking immediately after the round.
