Ryder Cup hospitality tent erupts into flames days after Europe’s win

A fire has broken out at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, just days after the course hosted this year’s Ryder Cup. Europe defeated Team USA to reclaim the trophy last Sunday and work is already underway to take down the multiple structures around the Italian golf course.

But it appears as though the event escaped a worrying tragedy with structures around the Marco Simone course built specifically for the Ryder Cup going up in flames. A clip soon circulated on social media showing a three-story structure being engulfed in flames.

Large black smoke clouds filled the sky with local news reporting that five teams of firefighters were on the scene and the blaze was quickly under control. No injuries have been reported and police were also on the scene to begin their investigation.

Ryder Cup Europe released a statement on social media, which read: “A fire was reported in one of the temporary hospitality structures to the right of the first fairway at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club earlier this afternoon. Local fire crews were called to the scene at 17:07 local time and quickly brought the blaze under control.

“Nobody was injured in the incident and the fire did not spread beyond the hospitality structure. There was no damage to the golf course or any other structure. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.”

Hundreds of thousands of fans were in attendance at the Ryder Cup last week with the first tee proving a popular choice for spectators. The first tee experience is a huge part of the Ryder Cup and Marco Simone built a temporary grandstand that wrapped around the entire tee box.
