Samsung Galaxy Fold 5: A Complete Overview of What We Know So Far – Smartprix Bytes
The world of smartphones eagerly awaits the arrival of Samsung’s next-generation flagship, the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. Building upon the success of its predecessors, this foldable device is expected to showcase the pinnacle of Samsung’s cutting-edge technology and design. As the successor to the highly acclaimed Galaxy Z Fold 4, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is poised to redefine the boundaries of mobile innovation.
Renowned for their signature foldable displays, Samsung has continuously pushed the boundaries of what is possible with each iteration of the Galaxy Z Fold series. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is no exception, with rumors suggesting an even more refined and durable folding mechanism, coupled with advancements in display technology that promise an immersive visual experience like never before.
But the Galaxy Z Fold 5 isn’t just about its striking design and innovative folding capabilities. Samsung understands the importance of a seamless user experience, and as such, the device is expected to boast powerful internals, including an upgraded system-on-chip (SoC) that will deliver unparalleled performance and responsiveness.
As the rumors continue to swirl, tech enthusiasts eagerly await the official unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, where all the speculation will finally be put to rest. Until then, we have compiled a complete overview of what we know so far:
When do we get to see the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5?
Given Samsung’s consistent pattern of launching new foldable phones since the debut of the first Galaxy Fold in 2019, there is every reason to expect another set of folding phones this year. In fact, the head of Samsung’s mobile division recently expressed the belief that the company’s foldable phones could surpass its S series flagships in terms of shipments by 2025. Samsung envisions its flexible line becoming the “new standard” for smartphones. Furthermore, numerous rumors are already swirling about the Galaxy Z Fold 5, further solidifying its existence.
As of now, Samsung has not officially confirmed its next unpacked event date i.e. on 27 July 2023 in Seoul. It is expected that Samsung will launch the Galaxy Z Fold5 at the event. This is clearly a change in Samsung’s usual practice as it historically held its second Unpacked event of the year in the month of August. This sudden change in strategy is clearly Samsung’s way to up the ante against Chinese OEMs who are also lining up to launch their foldable devices in the following months.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: What features and specifications can we expect?
Although official details regarding the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 are scarce at the moment, it is typical for more information to emerge as the launch date draws near. However, several rumors hint at various upgrades.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Design and Display
Previous iterations of Samsung’s booklet-style phones had a visible gap between the two halves when folded. However, earlier we exclusively reported that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will feature a teardrop-style hinge, similar to what has been seen on the OPPO Find N2 and the Google Pixel Fold. This design change would allow the two sides of the display to close flat on top of each other when the device is folded.
Moreover, this design alteration is expected to minimize the appearance of the display crease, which has been prominent in the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and its predecessors. With the new design, the display would form a teardrop shape when closed, resulting in a much gentler curve and reduced creasing. A design patent filed by Samsung several years ago showcased a similar concept.
According to Naver, a reputable Korean publication, a prototype of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 hinge was showcased at CES 2023. The alleged design was compared to that of the Galaxy Z Fold 4, and the newer hinge appeared to make the device significantly more compact.
Samsung has also confirmed the existence of a new hinge design to The Verge, sharing images of a prototype display called the Flex In & Out, capable of folding both inwards and outwards. Although not explicitly stated, there is a possibility of this screen technology being incorporated into the Galaxy Z Fold 5. If implemented, it would mark the most significant design change in the line since its inception.
While some may have hoped for a slidable or rollable form factor, similar to what Samsung Display has demonstrated recently, it is too early to speculate on the surprises Samsung may have in store.
According to display insider Ross Young, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is expected to be available in Beige, Black, and Light Blue color options. These colors will likely be renamed to Cream, Phantom Black, and Blue by Samsung. However, there could be additional color variants introduced.
Back in the month of April, we at SmartPrix exclusively shared the Galaxy Z Fold5 images with the world. These image renders revealed that Samsung has reduced the thickness of the phone to 13.4mm when folded. It is also expected to retain the same 6.2-inch outer display and 7.6-inch inner screen, although Samsung may decrease the size of the bezels.
Notied Samsung leakster Ice Universe further confirmed our story, claiming that the phone would measure 154.9 x 67.1 x 13.4mm when folded and 154.9 x 129.9 x 6.3mm when unfolded. These conflicting reports should be taken with caution.
Notably, Samsung’s new design changes may enable a feature unprecedented in Samsung foldable: an official dust resistance rating. According to leaker chunvn8888 on Twitter, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 might boast an IP58 rating. While not as comprehensive as the IP68 rating found on non-foldable devices, it would be a significant improvement over the IPX8 rating of previous Samsung foldables (which lacked any ingress protection).
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Specifications and Features
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 was powered by the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC. While there is currently no Plus variant of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, it is possible that Qualcomm could announce it prior to the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. If this happens, we can expect the newer SoC to be used in the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Alternatively, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 might include the Snapdragon for Galaxy chipset, which is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 found in the Galaxy S23 range.
One of the most significant rumors pertains to the camera specifications of the phone. Reports suggest that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 could feature a 108MP primary camera, a 64MP 2x telephoto lens, and a 12MP wide-angle camera.
Furthermore, there were rumors that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 might finally feature an S Pen slot, a highly anticipated addition given the device’s large foldable screen. However, a report from Korean outlet ET News indicates that Samsung has decided against including an S Pen slot in the Z Fold 5. The company supposedly made this choice to maintain a slim profile and avoid internal space constraints. Considering ET News’ reliability, it appears unlikely that an S Pen slot will be present in the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 Pricing
Both the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 were priced at Rs 1,54,999 upon their initial release. It is unlikely that Samsung will lower the price of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Moreover, given the current state of the global economy, it would be unwise for Samsung to increase the price of its flagship foldable, making it even more inaccessible to most consumers.
Unfortunately, there have been no leaks regarding the pricing of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 thus far. Should new information arise, we will update this article accordingly.
