The phone ships with the MediaTek Dimensity 900 chipset, a 120Hz AMOLED display, 108MP primary camera on the back and Android 12 OS. The handset competes directly with the recently launched OnePlus Nord CE 2 that also has the same Dimensity 900 chipset but a slightly faster 65W charging, Android 11 OS, and 64MP primary camera.

In this article, we compare the OnePlus Nord CE 2 and Samsung Galaxy M53 in terms of specifications, price, and design. Let’s get started.

Design

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G India launch event today: time, how to watch livestream, expected price, specs

Starting off with the Samsung Galaxy M53, it almost looks identical to the Samsung Galaxy M52. The phone has an centre-positioned punch-hole cutout for the selfie snapper, narrow bezels and flat edges. The volume rocker and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor for security are on the right edge. The SIM tray section is on the left side. The USB Type-C port and speaker grill are present at the bottom. The top houses a secondary microphone for noise cancellation.

Moving to the back, the Samsung Galaxy M53 has a large square module that houses the quad-camera lenses and an LED flash below it. The back panel seems to be made out of polycarbonate.

On the other hand, the OnePlus Nord CE 2 has a typical OnePlus design language written all over it. The phone has a punch-hole cutout on the front for the selfie snapper. There is a sizeable bezel below the screen. The volume rocker is on the left, while the power button is placed on the right.

Moving to the back, there’s a rectangular module to house triple camera lenses and an LED flash and the OnePlus logo. The back panel has this glass-like finish but the side frame is made out of plastic. The top portion of the phone houses a secondary microphone for noise cancellation, while the bottom edge has a 3.5mm, USB Type-C port, speaker grille and a primary microphone.

The design of a phone is always a subjective discussion considering the tastes of each individual vary. Some might like the OnePlus design, while others may dig the Galaxy M53’s straightforward approach.

Processor, storage, and RAM

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G

The Samsung Galaxy M53 is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 900 chipset coupled with the Mali-G68 MP4 GPU. The phone comes in two models: 6GB RAM+128GB storage and 8GB + 128GB storage. There’s support for up to 16GB of extendable RAM for better multitasking. The internal storage is further expandable up to 1TB via a micro SD card.

The OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G is powered by the same MediaTek Dimensity 900 5G processor with Mali-G68 MC4 GPU for games and graphics. It comes with either 6GB or 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB UFS 2.2 storage that is further expandable via a microSD up to 1TB.

The performance of both phones should be identical given they come with the same chipset.

Display

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G sports a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-0 display with a 120Hz refresh rate, punch-hole cutout, 1080×2400 pixels resolution, and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G sports a 6.43-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with 2400 x 1080 pixels resolution, a 90Hz refresh rate, 20:9 aspect ratio, HDR10+, a punch-hole cutout to house the selfie snapper, sRGB, Display P3, and a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 layer for protection. The panel is equipped with features like AI colour enhancement, dark mode and ambient display.

When it comes to the smartphone display, Samsung always takes the cookie courtesy of its popular AMOLED panel. In this case, too, we will prefer the 120Hz sAMOLED panel from the South Korean giant.

Camera

Moving to the camera, the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G has a quad-camera setup that features a segment-only 108MP primary camera paired with an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 2MP macro sensor, and a 2MP depth camera. A 32MP snapper takes care of selfie and video chat needs.

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G

On the other hand, the OnePlus Nord CE 2 5G has triple cameras on the back, comprising of a 64MP primary OmniVision sensor with LED flash, 6P lens, EIS, and f/1.7 aperture, an 8MP ultra-wide lens with 119-degree FoV, and a 2MP macro lens. There is a 16MP Sony IMX471 snapper on the front for selfies and video chats.

Historically, OnePlus cameras are usually considered average at best, especially in the budget segment. We believe the Samsung Galaxy M53 optics will have an edge, thanks to the large 108MP primary camera.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy M53 packs a 5000mAh battery with 25W fast-charging support. Considering there are phones with 120W fast charging in the segment, it is a huge letdown for a phone to have just 25W support.

On the other hand, the OnePlus Nord CE 2 packs a slightly smaller 4,500mAh battery but has a 65W fast charging support.

Connectivity

Connectivity features of both phones include 5G, 4G LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS, and a USB Type-C port for charging. While the Samsung phone boots Android 12 based OneUI 4.1 custom skin out of the box, on the other hand, the Nord CE 2 ships with a dated Android 11 UI. Samsung M53 5G has a segment-only auto data switching mode.

The Samsung Galaxy M53 has a side-mounted fingerprint sensor for security, while the OnePlus Nord CE 2 is within the display panel.

OnePlus Nord CE 2 vs Samsung Galaxy M53: Verdict

As evident, both the OnePlus Nord CE 2 and Samsung Galaxy M53 share some similar specifications. They come with the same MediaTek Dimensity 900 chipset and an FHD+ AMOLED display. However, Samsung takes a lead with regards to cameras thanks to a 108MP primary camera on the back and a 32MP selfie snapper on the front. The phone also has a better Super AMOLED 120Hz display compared to a 90Hz AMOLED panel on the Nord CE 2.

The South Korean giant is offering Android 12 OS out of the box and is promising timely updates as well. Samsung lags behind only in terms of fast charging as it just has 25W compared to 65W on the Nord CE 2. So if that isn’t a big deal for you, the Samsung Galaxy M53 is a better deal of the two. The Samsung M53 5G has launched with additional features such as segment-first auto data switching, and extendable virtual RAM support of up to 16 GB. It also comes with additional features such as magic object eraser, voice focus and a vapour cooling chamber.
