A new Samsung patent for smartphones has been recently approved by Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS). This new patented technology aims to improve safety and facial recognition on smartphones using a dual under-display camera (UDC) set up and the company is reportedly working on it.
The patent, which was filed back in March 2021, explains how the South Korean giant will be using the dual-UDC technology in its upcoming smartphones. Now, the patent has been approved by the Korean regulator body and it was first made public by the Dutch publication GalaxyClub (first spotted by Sammobile).
How will this technology work
To improve facial recognition, this technology will use the dual-UDC setup to simultaneously scan the user’s face from different angles. This will help in a three-dimensional or stereoscopic scan which will eventually help in upgrading the bio-verification system.
Moreover, to improve biometric security, the dual-UDC setup will also be able to measure users’ pupils as well. Samsung might not use this technology for Galaxy S23.

The company didn’t upgrade the camera in Galaxy Z Fold 4 but hid it better than the device’s predecessor. Meanwhile, Apple has used a software gimmick called Dynamic Island to hide the display cutouts on the newly released iPhone 14 Pro series. This new feature has been one of the biggest highlights of the new iPhone Pro variants and has caught the attention of both users and developers.
