samsung: Samsung cannot sell these Galaxy phones in Russia, here’s why – Times of India

An arbitration court in Moscow has banned Samsung from selling select models of its smartphones. The list covers a total of 61 Galaxy phone models that includes the recently launched Galaxy Z Flip 3.
The court has directed the South Korean company to halt the import and sales of these smartphones as they violate patents owned by SQWIN SA, a Switzerland-based company.
The company claims that Samsung Pay is based on its electronic payment system and that Samsung infringed its rights to the invention of the Electronic Payments System, protected by a Russian patent.
SQWIN SA claims to have registered a patent for the technology in Russia nearly eight years ago. Samsung, on the other hand, introduced its payment system in 2015 and expanded it to Russia in 2016.
Which Samsung smartphones are banned in Russia?
The court has prohibited Samsung from selling smartphones launched in the year 2017- Samsung Galaxy J5 to the current Galaxy Fold 3 and Flip 3 phones. As mentioned before, the list includes a total of 61 Samsung smartphones.
Samsung has appealed against the ruling.
Counterpoint Research says that Samsung was the second-largest smartphone seller in Russia in the first quarter of 2021. Samsung Pay, after Google Pay and Apple Pay, is the third-most-popular contactless payment system in the country. About 17 per cent of users use Samsung Pay for contactless payment in Russia. As per experts, Google Pay and Apple Pay may also fall under the lawsuits, as they too fall under the wording specified in the Sqwin SA patent.
