Canalys, one of the leading analyst companies, reported a 17% YoY decline in smartphone smartphones in Q4 2022 in India. In 2022 alone, the shipment dropped by 11% showcasing the extreme drop from last year. Despite all that, South Korean giant Samsung finished first with a market share of 22% compared to 20% in 2021.

In Q4 2022, Samsung took the mantle with 21% of the total market share with 6.7 million units sold in the last three months. It was a 21% drop from Q4 2021 when the giant booked 8.5 million units sold.
Vivo, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Realme took the top five positions after Samsung. The Chinese giant Vivo made it to the second position recording 6.4 million units sold (+13% over Q4 2021); Xiaomi reported 5.5 million units sold (-40% from Q4 2021); Oppo did 5.4 million units in Q4 2022 as opposed to 5.0 million units in Q4 2021 reporting a 9% increase in annual growth.
Finally, Realme was at 2.7 million in Q4 2021 where it suffered a major decline in shipment from 7.6% recorded in Q4 2021. Canalys adds that a total of 32.4 million units were sold by the top five contenders and other brands which is again a dip from 44.2 million units that were sold in Q4 2021 giving a wholesome 27% dip in the annual growth rate.
According to Sanyam Chaurasia, an analyst at Canalys, India was positioned to combat the global decline in smartphone shipment, however, the decline in domestic consumer spending in the last few months of 2022 resulted in an overall decline. He further added that the mid-to-high-end segment resulted in better performance. However, as consumers have updated technology, this resulted in the decline of devices last year.
Zoom out a bit and you will get the data for 2021 and 2022 as well. Xiaomi shipped 29.6 million units in 2022 reporting a 26% decline compared to 40.2 million units in 2021. It made the largest drop overall. Vivo’s shipments were at 25.4 million units in 2022 which dropped by a mere 2% when compared to 2021’s 25.8 million units shipped.
Chaurasia added that Oppo’s focus on the offline market helped it to boost sales, especially during the festive season and Oppo tagged along too. On the other hand, Xiaomi reported heavy losses when clearing its inventory as it kept dependent on online platforms only.

Samsung topped the market share globally in both 2021 and 2022 with 20% and 22% of the market share respectively. Cupertino-based giant Apple upgraded its market share from 17% in 2021 to 19% in 2022. Xiaomi reported a 1% decline in global shipments while Oppo reported a 2% and Vivo updated its 1% dip between 2021 and 2022 as well.
