Samsung: Why LG, Samsung are ‘worried’ over Apple MacBook sales numbers – Times of India
The PC market has been facing turbulent times in the last couple of quarters. Sales have been dwindling and the last quarter was particularly rough as every brand saw a major decline in shipments. Apple recently reported its quarterly results and the revenue from Mac was down for the second consecutive quarter. The numbers have reportedly got Samsung and LG worried.
OLED panel for Mac expected in future
Both Samsung Display and LG display are manufacturers of OLED panels and are expected to supply them to Apple. A report by South Korean publication The Elec suggests that both Korean companies have raised concern over several issues. Samsung is working on 8th generation of OLED panels whereas LG is working on 6th generation. The 8th generation panel improves the display quality and is expected to cost a lot more, which could push the final retail price as well.
The report says that both Samsung and LG haven’t placed orders to equipment needed to make Gen 8 OLED panels. The companies are worried about spending too much and are concerned over profitability.
One of the main reason is the lack of assurance about how much Apple will pay for the OLED panels. Furthermore, it is not clear how many units Apple plans to buy as well.
Apple hasn’t used OLED panels for the iPad or the MacBook. The iPad is a crucial role here as it is rumoured the first OLED panel iPad models will arrive in 2024. The MacBook with OLED panel is expected to arrive in 2026.
Samsung has committed to spend billions of dollars in developing the Gen 8 OLED panels. However, the report says that both LG and Samsung have told their suppliers that they aren’t prepared to spend more on Gen 8 panels than they did on the Gen 6 panels. The Mac sales numbers — and the overall decline in PC market — has given both Korean companies a lot to mull over.
